FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ZOYSIA  PLUGS, SOD, AND LAWNS

ZOYSIA GRASS, MEYER Z-52 IN PARTICULAR IS PROBABLY THE MOST WONDERFUL LAWN GRASS YOU CAN HAVE.  IT IS EVERYTHING YOU'VE READ ABOUT AND MORE.  DROUGHT TOLERANT, HEAT TOLERANT, WINTER HARDY, CHOKES OUT WEEDS, NEEDS LITTLE WATER AND VIRTUALLY NO CHEMICALS AND YOU DON'T NEED TO MOW IT NEARLY AS FREQUENTLY AS OTHER LAWN GRASSES.
Q: How many zoysia plugs do I need?

A: You need enough plugs to put either 1 plug per square foot or 2 plugs per square foot. First, estimate your square footage. As an example, consider a yard 20 feet by 50 feet. That's 1000 square feet. Placing the plugs at one per square foot you would need 1000 plugs and you would have a filled-in lawn in 2 growing seasons. Placing the plugs at two per square foot you would need 2000 plugs and you would have a filled-in lawn in 1 growing seasons. In more southern areas fill-in may be quicker. In more northern areas you may want to consider two plugs per square foot only, due to fairly short growing seasons.

Q: Can I still plant Zoysiagrass in the heat of the summer?

A: Yes. You can plant Zoysiagrass 365 days a year as long as you can get a plugger in the ground. The advantages are many to getting them in during fall time. You will then be ready for spring rains. Visit the zone chart page, find your location on the map and instructions are furnished. Remember Zoysiagrass is heat tolerant and very heat-loving. Planting plugs has nothing to do with when you can plant typical grass seed. It is a wonderfully hardy fine lawn grass.

Q: My lawn service doesn't pick up clippings, is this a problem?

A: Yes and no. Zoysiagrass needs to have the clippings caught for best results. Thatch build-up must be prevented. If you absolutely cannot catch the clippings make sure you set up a program of core areation, not not power raking, verticutting is also an option.

Q: Is Zoysiagrass any more or less sensitive to the effects of dog urine?

A: Zoysiagrass is more tolerant of female dog urine (the worst kind) than any other grass? If your dog goes in one particular spot it will probably turn the grass off color. It is a good idea to leach the area out with water. This will allow the grass to heal by recovering the area. It will also take away the odor and your dog won't look for just that one spot.

Q: Is annual de-thatching a good idea?

A: It is not necessary to de-thatch every year. Every 2 years is necessary though. If you do not de-thatch the thatch build up acts like talcum powder and causes the water and nutreints to run sideways thus not getting to the plant's rootzone. You never want to power rake zoysiagrass as it will tear the roots right out of the ground. Either verticut, going first one direction then 180 degrees the other direction picking up the tines from the ground at the end of each pass or core areate. This also relieves any compaction that may occur.

Q: How tall does Zoysiagrass grow?

A: It grows to a height of 9 to 10 inches if not mowed at all.

Q: I live in USDA Zone 10, will Zoysiagrass turn brown in the winter?

A: No, Zoysiagrass will only turn brown in response to a hard killing frost. It will then green right back up if the temperatures are warm.

Q: I have K-31 fescue in my lawn, will Zoysiagrass take it over?

A: Yes, however it is tough. You may want to kill the K-31 with Round-Up Pro. Make sure you follow label directions. Spray when the grass is green then wait 7 to 10 days and spray again. Spot follow-up spraying may be necessary. Zoysiagrass will then take it over.

Q: I have bermudagrass in my lawn will Zoysiagrass take it over?

A: Not without help. You may want to kill the Bermudagrass with Round-Up Pro. Make sure you follow label directions. Spray when the grass is green then wait exactly 10 days and spray again. Spot follow-up spraying may be necessary. T here are chemicals that control bermudagrass if you do not want to kill it while the zoysia grows together.Acclaim and Fusilade II will inhibit the bermuda and not the zoysia It takes a few applications this way. As with any chemical read and follow the directions completely, do not spray on a windy day, watch for runoff and again read the entire label.

Q: Will Zoysiagrass grow underneath my big shade trees?

A: Zoysiagrass needs 3 full hours of sunlight per day. It will not grow well directly under any tree that provides more shade than that. Trimming the lower branches may allow enough sun to get in. Some trees require (and create) acidic soil. No grass will do well under such a tree. We suggest some other type of landscaping in these areas.

Q: How fast does this grass grow, how often do I have to mow?

A: You will want to mow every week to 10 days. You want to keep your lawn to about 2 inches in height. You never want to cut off more than one third of your grasses height off at a time. So if it is 3 inches then cut 1 inch off only. If your grass is growing more than this you are either over-watering or over-fertilizing.

Q: Can I keep Zoysiagrass from invading my flowerbeds?

A: Yes. There are 3 ways to do this: 1. Put up a border that is 2 - 3 inches both above and below the ground. This will stop Zoysiagrass. 2. Trim the "runners" that are aiming into your flowerbeds about 3 times a year and you will be able to control its spread. 3. Spray a small strip with Round-Up Pro when you see the runners have reached the other side. The disadvantages to this are you will have a dead streak in your lawn and you must be careful with Round-Up because it will kill anything that is green.

Q: Will the Zoysiagrass grow together more quickly if I put the plugs in more closely?

A: The difference between 6 inch centers and 12 inch centers is significant. It will cover in half the time on 6 inch centers. The difference between 4 inch centers and 6 inch centers it will grow together a bit more quickly but a good deal of its growing time is the plug itself becoming established. Once this occurs Zoysiagrass will cover at a reasonable rate of speed.

Q: What should I do with my yard prior to planting zoysiagrass plugs?

A: Mow the existing lawn very closely. Water it to where it is moist. Make all of the holes first and then install the plugs. Remember what you start with is what you will wind up with. You cannot top dress zoysia to make it level, do this prior to planting.

Q: Should I have my lawn aerated before planting Zoysiagrass Plugs?

A: If your soil is compacted for any reason core aeration is a good idea before planting your Zoysiagrass Plugs. You do not want to core aerate again until a year or two after your lawn has grown together.

Q: Will Zoysiagrass grow in sandy soil?

A: Yes. Zoysiagrass is very impartial to soil type.

Q: Will Zoysiagrass grow in clay?

A: Yes. Zoysiagrass is very impartial to soil type. If your yard is bare incorporate gypsum at the rate according to the bag. This will break-up the clay somewhat and the plugs will cover more quickly. Follow this with a pH test and adjust as necessary.

Q: Does Zoysiagrass grow in high salinity areas?

A: Yes. Zoysiagrass is very salt tolerant. (Please see the Info Page showing the studies on Salinity).

Q: Does Zoysiagrass turn brown in the winter?

A: Zoysiagrass turns a wheat color about 2 weeks after the first hard killing frost then greens back up when the nighttime temperatures are consistently above 40 degrees. Many people choose to dye it during winter months. The colorants used have become quite consistant in keeping things green all year long.

Q: My Lawn is turning brown in spots and it was beautifully green at the beginning of the year. Now it is mid-summer and we haven't had rain for a very long time. It appears to be dying. What is going on?

A: The time of year this happened in addition to the lack of rain for 2 months, late, hot going into fall the problem is probably thatch related. The only way you're really going to tell is go to the center of the problem and with a knife dig an ice-cream cone shaped plug at least 4 inches deep. Do this in at least 3 places and look at the profile of the plug to see where the dirt stops and actually how thick the thatch level is and then you'll see the grass trying to live on top of the thatch. Proper aereation will keep this from happening and in most cases rescue your lawn. NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO POWER RAKE ZOYSIAGRASS, IT WILL DESTROY IT.

Q: Will Zoysiagrass grow in my state with my temperatures and soil conditions?

A: Zoysiagrass will grow in 49 out of the 50 United States as well as the Caribbean and points south. You have certain problems to consider in the far north and a small area of Florida. In the far north you must consider the growing season runs from the first frost to the last frost. In a very small section of Florida Zoysiagrass must be treated for the sting nematode and cinch bug.

Q: When do you start shipping plugs?

A: We ship 365 days per year, weather permitting. We're all familiar with warm spells during the winter, right? We have been logging the amount of green in zoysiagrass, month by month for over 40 years and we've found a warming trend. The last 3 years the zoysiagrass has never had every leaf turn straw color. So if we can get a sod cutter into our fields we will be shipping when you want it. If you're in the south you can plant 365 days per year. As you move north the advantages of planting in the fall are amazing. If you can get your plugs in 4 weeks before the first hard killing frost you will be many weeks ahead in the spring. You will not receive your plugs when there is snow on the ground. We will ship to you when it is appropriate for you to be planting always keeping your requests at the fore front.

Q: Where do you ship to?

A: We ship all over the world with the exception of Mexico. The problem is the weight of the packages. It is possible but quite expensive.
