Page 1) Upon receipt open the boxes of plugs exposing the plugs but leaving them in the boxes and
Sprinkle them with water, don't wash the dirt off but make sure all are damp. Put the
plastic
back over the plugs and keep the closed boxes in a cool shady area until ready to plant.
2) Zoysia can be planted in the fall with equal success.
3) Mow yard fairly closely. Do not
mow over freshly planted plugs for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Make sure
yard is damp before planting zoysia plugs. DO NOT plant plugs in dry ground.
4) Dig all of your holes first. To use the plugger, step on the bottom and push it into the
ground with your feet. Twist the handle with your hands and then lift it out of the ground. As you dig the next
hole the plug that
is in the plugger will be pushed up by the plug from the hole you are digging.
Continue this process and the plugs will just fall off to the sides, you
need not remove them from the plugger! Make hole deep enough in
ground so that plug fits a little below ground level. Make sure plugs
are in contact with ground on the bottom and sides. Fill around plug
with loose soil if necessary. For your plugs to cover in 1 growing
season place them in a pattern like the 5 on a pair of dice (checkerboard style) covering 1
square foot. This turns out to be 2 plugs per square foot. There are 5 plugs in the first square foot.
After that each square foot shares 3 plugs. (See Picture
Below). For your plugs to cover in 2 growing seasons plant them with
the first 2 plugs in the upper corners of your first square foot then move down
1 foot and over 6 inches again planting in the corners of your square foot that is 6 inches over. This also looks like a
5 on a die pattern, resulting in 12 inch centers and requiring only
1 plug per square foot.
5) In large areas water as you go. You do not want the plugs to dry out.
Apply a liquid fertilizer to start with such as Miracle Grow. Do this for the first 3 weeks then you can
continue to use Miracle Grow or switch to a granular fertilizer. You don't want to apply
this when the blades of grass are wet. It is best to use an agricultural
fertilizer such as 13-13-13. Do not use a slow release fertilizer
for the first 2 years because you want to fertilize often to speed growth.
6) WATER THOROUGHLY, immediately after fertilizing.
Water must penetrate ground below the level of the plug. It is a
good idea to water the first time and then pull a plug back up to make
sure the water is as deep as the plug. Keep ground well watered.
Daily watering first 3 weeks. Every other day watering for the next 3 weeks.
If it
is an exceptionally dry spell water more.
7) Spring planted plugs should be fertilized every 5 to
6 weeks during the first growing season. After that fertilize once
in the spring and once in mid to late fall each year. Late summer or fall planted
plugs should be fertilized every 6 weeks during the first growing season
and the second growing season. After that fertilize once in the spring
and once in mid to late fall each year.
8) Ample watering during hot weather will help zoysia
spread faster. The plugs will take about 4 weeks of growing to become
re-established. They are constantly putting down new feeder roots
through this process. After this time period you will begin to see
the plug put out "runners". This is when the plugs are beginning to grow together.
If you see green in the plugs they are doing fine. Again, given logical growing areas and making sure no bulldozers
run over them, the only
thing that will kill these very sturdy plants is lack of water. Zoysia
can be planted through-out your zone's growing season with equal success.
